Historical Context
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and memories of 1979. The two clubs have a special connection, also competing in Forest's most recent continental tour in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the European Cup final from 1979 that links these clubs, with Britain's first £1m player Francis scoring the winner of a rather dull championship game to secure historic victory for the the English club.
"Forest's famous bosses, unassuming and low-key amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench calmly observing the mafficking," wrote the match reporter. Their achievement was an outstanding achievement that it is difficult to imagine happening again – from Second Division to European football in three seasons."
Worth mentioning to reflect upon Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Scandinavian side to advance to the ultimate game under English manager Bob Houghton.
The current fixture is a distant from that peak, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are full of confidence after thrashing Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, while Malmö haven't kicked a competitive ball since last month following the completion of Allsvenskan. The smart money is on the English side tonight.
Additional games on offer in this clockwatch. The Glasgow club have already been lost to a Braga this season. Rangers are last place of the competition table at the middle of the initial phase with exactly zero. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a comeback for a qualification place.
Coverage will persist with all the evening matches and provide the latest scores from the earlier matches, including the Birmingham match and Rotterdam vs Glasgow.
